From one teacher to another
A wall through the middle of a city is the kind of detail that actually sticks with students, more than most abstractions about ideology ever do, so I use it as the entry point into the whole divided-Germany story. Why a government would build a wall to keep its own people in, not out, is the question that gets a class paying attention before the lesson gets into the decades the wall stood.
It's inside the Cold War unit, one of several lessons on the standoffs that defined it, so it functions as the moment students can point to and say that's when the divide became permanent and visible.
